What Resolution for Posters Prints Clearly?

A poster can look perfectly sharp on a laptop, then come back from print soft, blocky or strangely fuzzy. If you are wondering what resolution for posters is right, the answer starts with the final print size, not the size of the image on your screen. A file that works for an A4 flyer may not hold up when enlarged to A1 for a shop window, school event or real estate display.

For most posters viewed up close, 300 pixels per inch at the final printed size is the dependable benchmark. Larger posters can often print beautifully at a lower resolution because people view them from further away. Getting this balance right helps you achieve a crisp result without creating needlessly enormous files.

What resolution for posters should you use?

For standard indoor posters, aim for 300 PPI at the final print size. PPI means pixels per inch and describes the detail held in your digital artwork. People often call this DPI, which means dots per inch, but PPI is the more accurate term when preparing image files.

If you are printing an A3 poster, set the artwork to A3 at 300 PPI from the start. If it is A1, build it at A1 at 300 PPI where possible. This gives photographs, fine text and detailed graphics the clarity they need when someone is standing nearby.

That said, large-format printing has a practical exception. A big window poster, construction sign or event banner may be seen from several metres away. At that distance, 150 to 200 PPI at final size is usually more than enough. For very large signage viewed from a distance, 100 to 150 PPI can be suitable, depending on the artwork and where it will be displayed.

The key point is that resolution should be judged at the printed dimensions. A 300 PPI image that is only 10 cm wide cannot become a sharp 1-metre-wide poster simply because the file says 300 PPI. Enlarging it spreads the same pixels across a much larger area.

Start with the finished poster size

Before selecting a resolution, decide how big the poster needs to be. Common sizes include A4 for noticeboards and counter displays, A3 for promotions and small event posters, A2 for shop windows, and A1 or A0 for high-visibility campaigns, plans and presentations.

At 300 PPI, an A4 file needs roughly 2480 x 3508 pixels. An A3 poster needs about 3508 x 4961 pixels, while an A1 poster needs approximately 7016 x 9933 pixels. Those numbers sound large, but they are useful when checking whether a supplied photo is suitable for the job.

A mobile photo can look great in an A4 poster if it was taken in good light with a recent mobile. The same photo may be unsuitable as a full-bleed A1 background, especially if it has been cropped heavily, downloaded from social media or sent through a messaging app that compressed it.

If the photo will only occupy a small part of the layout, it does not need to meet the pixel dimensions of the entire poster. Measure the size it will print at, then check its effective resolution at that size.

A quick example

Imagine you have a photograph that is 2400 pixels wide. Printed at 300 PPI, it can be about 20 cm wide with excellent detail. At 150 PPI, it can be about 40 cm wide and may still look very good in a large poster viewed from normal distance. Stretch it to 80 cm wide, however, and the image will have only 75 PPI. It may look soft or pixelated, particularly around faces, lettering and sharp edges.

This is why a print-ready PDF can be technically high resolution overall while still containing one low-resolution image. The PDF itself is not the issue. It is the quality of the placed images inside it.

Vector artwork stays sharp at any size

Logos, icons, line drawings and simple illustrations are often best supplied as vector artwork. Vector files use mathematical paths rather than a fixed grid of pixels, so they can scale up cleanly from a business card to a wall poster.

Common vector formats include PDF, AI, EPS and SVG. A properly made PDF can contain both vector text and graphics alongside high-resolution photographs. This makes it one of the most useful formats for poster printing.

Avoid taking a screenshot of a logo from a website. Website logos are usually designed for screen use and may be very small. A screenshot can turn a crisp brand mark into a jagged, blurred shape when printed. If you do not have the original logo file, ask the business, designer or brand manager for a vector version or a high-resolution PDF.

Text should also remain as live text or be converted to outlines when the file is finalised. It will print cleanly at any size, provided the font size is sensible. Very small text can be hard to read on a poster even when the resolution is perfect, so viewing distance matters here too.

Resolution is only one part of a clear poster

A high-resolution image cannot fix every artwork problem. Colour mode, bleed, contrast and file export settings all affect the finished result.

For professionally printed posters, CMYK is generally the safest colour mode. Screens display colours using RGB light, which can appear brighter and more saturated than ink on paper. Bright blues, greens and fluorescent-looking shades are the colours most likely to change. A well-prepared print file manages expectations before it reaches the press.

Bleed is another essential detail when colour or images run to the edge of the page. Add 3 mm of bleed around the poster unless your printer has supplied different specifications. Keep key text, logos and faces safely inside the trim area too. This allows for normal cutting tolerance and prevents an important detail from sitting too close to the edge.

When exporting, choose a high-quality print PDF rather than a small file intended for email or web sharing. Many design programs offer presets such as “smallest file size”, which can downsample images and reduce their quality. A press-quality PDF is usually the better choice.

Avoid these common poster file problems

Some issues are easily missed until the file is enlarged. A quick pre-print check can save time, money and disappointment:

  • Images copied from Facebook, Instagram, websites or email signatures are usually too small for large posters.

  • Files exported from Canva, Word or PowerPoint can work well, but should be exported as a print-quality PDF at the intended poster size.

  • A photo may be high resolution before cropping, then become too small after a tight crop is applied.

  • Rasterised text, screenshots and low-quality JPEG logos often show fuzzy edges when printed.

  • Repeatedly saving a JPEG can introduce compression marks, especially in flat colours and gradients.

Do not judge image quality only at “100%” on screen. Zooming in can reveal pixelation, but it can also make a perfectly suitable large-format image look worse than it will from normal viewing distance. The most useful question is whether the image has enough pixels for the size it will occupy on the finished poster.

When lower resolution is the sensible choice

Not every poster needs 300 PPI. A large-format photo backdrop, a banner-style poster or a window graphic does not need the same fine detail as a menu poster placed beside a café counter. Trying to make every oversized job 300 PPI can result in files so large that they are slow to save, upload and process, with little visible benefit.

For a poster designed to be read from across a room, good hierarchy matters more than ultra-fine photographic detail. Use a strong headline, adequate contrast, generous type size and a clean layout. A simple message that can be understood quickly is more effective than a high-resolution design crowded with tiny information.

There are also occasions where a lower-resolution image is the only image available. It may still work if it is used small, softened deliberately into a background, placed behind an overlay, or printed at a size suited to its available detail. The right solution is not always to reject the image. It is often to adjust the layout around it.

Get a file check before committing to print

If you have the final size, your artwork and a deadline, a quick professional file check is worthwhile. It can confirm effective image resolution, flag missing bleed, identify low-quality logos and make sure the document is set up for the chosen stock and finishing.
